Elke dag, real time.

SquibS teenagers showed their talents at conference in Münster.

The 15th of September a group of 11 kids did a presentation at the ECHA conference on Giftedness in Munster, Germany. The youngest was 13 the oldest 20. They made it into an experience no one will ever forget. (ECHA = European Council of High Ability)

They spoke to the public (in English) and told their personal story about what they have grown through in their relative short lives. And how SquibS played an important role in that.
SquibS is a foundation founded by Wynand Berndsen en Anita Wuestman (my wife). SquibS organises events for high ability youth in the age of 12 to about 20. The events vary from weekends in a holiday farm to city trips and Survivals. This year the activities expanded to more serious aspects of the life of high potentials, like participation in governmental meetings. The presentation in Munster is a perfect example of that. As is the participation of a competition called The Power of Small.

The Power of Small addresses the needs of people in underserved communities. Our offer is to strengthen entrepreneurial skills in local economies by expending the way SquibS is organised, to different areas in Europe. As we think youth in Spain, France and Greece can use a little (or more) of the spirit we see in our kids. Especially teenagers in countries that feel the burden of the economic crises need to challenge their hope and mental and emotional muscles. And that is what SquibS is about.

For their story to be told, the participants in the Munster Conference had to discover what makes our SquibS Youth community this successful. They came together several times and found out, using Value Engineering techniques and 120 sticky notes, WHY they like SquibS so much and HOW we make it tick this way. Together they came up with exactly all the values that, if clustered well, add up to the levels of consciousness and development Anita and I use so often in Spiral Dynamics. (See earlier blog with a summary of SD, klick here!

As we explained the different qualities of the variety in paradigms / levels in Spiral Dynamics, they started to recognise their own development and even where they stumbled and got hurt. And luckily for our practitioners they also feel the potential of the aspects they did not already fully incorporate.

In the next blog I will list the principles and goals we follow at SquibS. If you compare them with the levels of Spiral Dynamics one will see that we cover all the levels. That is what makes SquibS so powerful. We thrive for the Green and Yellow (SD colour code) but do not neglect the earlier colours. And in the way we do that we let the youth organise their own events, as they did with the presentation.
They discusses the content, agreed with the conclusions and found a place to add their own stories. One created the presentation lay-out, our daughter ironed all the logo’s and post-it images on special T-shirts and so we really co-created the whole job. Which ended yesterday whit a very successful presentation at the conference.

Not only did they get the message trough, including a difficult theoretical part. They also got into the heads and hearts of the audience. All the stories came out so clear, pure and authentic, with all the suffering and pain underneath and the proudness to be able to tell it on this platform, that everyone got touched by emotion. Every kid got applauded and at the end the compliments were unbelievable.

In the tradition of SquibS we asked everyone to leave a feedback massage (this time on the T-shirt of our kids). This broke the emotional ice at the end and the audience and our teenagers really got in contact. The group got invitations for other conferences, personal stories were told and individual reactions were shared.

At the end it felt more like being part of a piece of art then being part of a presentation. The vibe in the room, the flow of every one of us and the reactions out of the audience, they added up the same way as the events of SquibS do in our regular camps and events. This time sharing it with professors, researchers, consultants en teachers, specialised in - and knowing everything about giftedness, but who, as one told us, never had an experience in their profession so far,  that emotionally grasped them like this.

Looking at it from a distance we can say SquibS unlockes the same energy as other organisations want to release, that I am part of, like the groups I mentioned in earlier blogs, that believe we have to find new (Green and Yellow) ways to organise and work. But, instead of talking about it, at SquibS we practice what we preach. And the beauty of it is that our practitioners experience the value of it and incubate it really easy. Making it useful for themselves and they are even capable of sharing it with others.

On the 15th a 15 year old girl taught the audience the quality of organizing together in co-creation (Green) and how she herself struggles with trying to control and seeking structure from the start (Bleu). To explain this to the audience, the group made a drawing to underline what they see at SquibS, which looks like drawings of highly educated professionals in conferences like the STOOS Stampede. Unbelievable strong and intelligent, but also logic and understandable, as they are used to alternative ways of organizing at SquibS.

I really feel like we are able to open up the world to the possibilities of new generations by having young people discovering their potential. Doing things in their new and creative way, getting out of too much planning, structure and control into the field of possibilities, co-creation, connectedness and synergy. I hope that they do not all have to go the difficult route some of our SquibS kids did, but I am sure these experiences will make a difference in their lives and that of others!

Value Engineering: Everything of value is defenseless

UPDATE:  on 31 aug. it is made officially that I as a Value Engineer will facilitate the 3 chosen innovations that are the result of the FMM Innovation Event. June 2012 where I was one of the 3 host speakers. I am trilled and honored! We are going to work in 3 groups of participants to power up the innovative ideas and see how we can Kick-Start them. Reading this Blog gives You an idea how that will work.

All around us we feel the urge to respond to what we call The Crisis.

In Holland it’s election time and every politic party tries to draw attention of possible voters by exposing their exclusive solutions that will solve our problems. Unfortunately they all use the old fashioned way of rebelling against other parties instead of trying to listen and understand the motives of others and why they thing they are right.

This is characteristic for the way our world has come to operate. We all have to expose ourselves. We need to be different and we show that by accentuating the errors of others. We behave as individuals but at the same time we are afraid to be laughed, we need to look good for our Peers and we need to be connected with the group we see as part of our Brand.

These kind of emotions and counterproductive behaviour stand in our way if we really want to create a better world. As everything is connected with everything, not only in nature but also in society, we have to face the complex situation we are in and no one of us can do that on his one. Nor can politic parties, companies or governments. We have to join forces, connect our energy, knowledge and networks.

Students practicing Value Engineering
Only, if we put a group of people together to achieve something, this does not necessarily work out too well. We call that a meeting, a chairman takes his role, shy people try to hide themselves, extroverts take all the time, craftsman and experts get bored and at the end all Ego’s are angry and frustrated because they did not get what they think they earn. So we need something else.

That something is Value Engineering. Knowing we need diversity in groups to get a wide view of a problem and being able to create innovative solutions, more than 65 years ago a man called Larry Miles, a buyer at General Electric, discovered that instead of asking for rubber he should ask for a seal solution. By given room to providers to come with smarter offers, combined with other materials and possibilities he got more value for his money. He called it demanding for Functions instead of products .

Later on a man called “By The Way” (No lie! I have met him personally two years ago, he was 91 years old and very much alive and kicking!) added a technique he saw his grandchildren do automatically. Asking WHY and HOW stimulates one to think about deeper lying motives and functions behind the functions. Once you know WHY something is wanted you can think of a proper HOW you want to accomplish that. Every answer is written down as a new function. These Why and HOW answers = functions fit together as beads on a string. Every answer = function to the left goes deeper into the WHY and the same answers = functions read to the right are answers to the HOW question.
Sounds difficult? It’s not! It’s so simple, almost childish. Only, as soon as we try to figure out complex situations we can find and describe so many Functions that putting them all together into a clear structure of HOW and WHY makes it complicated. A function structure whit all the relevant functions put together in a logic How and Why manner is called a FAST (Function Analysis System Technique) but putting a FAST together takes a little while.

Actually working on a Function Analysis is what we in Holland should call a way of SLOW MANAGEMENT. We take time to get to know each other’s motives, We really need to understand the way other members of the Value Engineering team think and WHY they want something. The good thing about that is that a team grows to understand each other and even better, this creates Trust!!

Value Engineering; Erasing barriers, steer together
So what happens is that a multidisciplinary group of people, consisting of Stakeholders as in Users, Experts, Owners, Investors, Architects, Engineers (depending on the issue at stake), start working together creating a Function Analysis and at the same time they develop Trust, they accomplice real connection and all their Craftmanship and Knowledge gets on the table and ordered in an transparent and open structure. This is the perfect start of a team that has to achieve great things. And which team does not these day!

And it is not over by that! The next step is the Creative Phase in where the same team brainstorms over the functions that are most probable to make a huge difference, as they can be done in a different and better way.

The best and most valuable ideas get filtered and little teams work them out to complete innovations, with the do’s and don’ts, the issues being solved, the risks that are involved and so on.

Getting to the core of problems, products, projects of programmes helps to find better solutions. It makes it obvious to the partners / stakeholders that they are in it together and that they have to really co-create to achieve the ultimate goal and a suitable level of effectiveness and creativity, as synergy does not fall from the sky but as to be earned by listening, connecting and sharing.

Exactly this is what is missing in most projects and teams. They think 1 and 1 is 2. They never discover the true effect of synergy and that 1 and 1 can also be 27. And to get along with the scarcity around us we need to make every 1 into a 27 and in a way that after the 27 is used it can be up-cycled or at least recycled to another 28 or more.

We have a scarcity on money (most of us anyway) on raw materials, on (non-renewable) energy, large parts of the world on clean water. And we think we have a scarcity in time and even more in attention. We lack creativity, we fight over patent rights and we make bigger contracts to try to be safe. Instead of fighting and thinking that everything we value gets so expensive and rare that we have to try to control everything even more, we have to get rid of this dumb way of looking at things and the world. As soon as we start sharing our thoughts, ideas and maybe even our things, there is no more scarcity and we can experience great, beautiful and rich things without exploiting anything or anyone anymore.

Such high goals and such a simple tool as Value Engineering isn’t that way out of proportion? I think not. Of course  there are other techniques to co-create and work together, but I know of nothing so simple that can move obstacles as mountains this easy.

In America and Great Britain they know this. Value Engineering is officially required in governmental projects to be sure money is well spend. In Korea car manufacturers use it to improve designs of cars and car parts. In Holland it starts to get noticed, but so far only in technical companies to safe money in building or manufacturing areas.
I want to use its impact in the human area. To reinforce projects that are stumbling, to invent totally new solutions, to shorten turnarounds, to simplify governmental processes or to invent and implement New Ways of Working in a participatory way.

To diffuse Value Engineering into the organisations that could benefit from VE (and all companies and projects do!) I initiate Masterclasses Value Engineering, I use it in guest lectures at Applied Science Universities and offer myself as a Value Engineering facilitator in situations that ask for innovation.

If you know situations that I can be of assistance please let me know!

Do you have experiences with Value Engineering please respond and let’s share that with my readers.

Tips? Kom op en reageer!

Zomergast trends. Herken jij ze ook? Voel je ze al?

Lidewij Edelkoort heerlijke zomergast.

We moeten dingen samen gaan doen.

In Co-creatie geproduceerd. In lokale markten.

Marketing is dood!

What do we gain by making organizations a better place to work and learn?

I think we all want to have a pleasant job, to meet nice people and make a difference. If we add making money, than no one will disagree. But that does not explain why lots of communities come together to talk about better ways of working.

I joined and created several groups, on LinkedIn and in real life, that are driven by creating better places to work, live and learn. All of them longing for something they cannot easily find the proper words for and making it work is even more of a burden.
On my journey the last couple of years, I seem to have grasped some things that are in the focus of all the groups I play some kind of role. And to me these “things” unify the basics all these groups want to benefit from.

One of the problems I (and the rest of the World) run into is that all these initiatives behave rather isolated. Every community operates in its own territory, even though some of them cover the whole planet, they are only known in small parts of society.

I think the best thing we can do is bringing those initiatives / groups together. So they can learn from each other , build upon the proof others have gained and be a collective that can create Trust in the hearts and souls of those who do not have a clue on how to handle the changing world around them.

Communities that I know, who thrive for a better world, in basically almost exactly the same way:
  •  DeLimes, Rijnlands Organiseren. They celebrate the” Nortern European way of organizing”. Working in the organisational change area.
  • STOOS. International community out of the ICT AGILE scene. Trying to become AGILE instead of just doing AGILE.
  • BetaCodex. Network willing to make work work again. Applying Beyond Budgeting and non hierarchical value chain ways of operating. Organizational change. Rooted in Germany (I think.)
  • Plein 2050. A digital community that wants individuals and organizations to come together to border less join in virtual cafés and be innovative.
  •  DenktankProject.nl  A think tank in the scene of project management who looks for ways to make complex projects more successful.
  •  Broedplaats Arnhem HAN. Collective of educational, organisational en individual innovators. Passionate creative experts who want to innovate education, life and work on a Glocal Scale (Glocalization  = Global thinking on a Local scale)
  • Giftedness 2012. Conference in Dubai on High Ability, where I met dozens of people from all over the world, trying to get education to differentiate. And putting the human side and special talents of the individual as the central way of steering and facilitating. Making them work together to achieve innovation.
  • FM2Share. A "flock" of experts on Facility Management. Al tough the expertise is broad, the form of the network itself is very much according the "making the world a better place" way of working. Not being a formal organization, no boss, no contracts, just doing well by being well and together acting in synergy for and with clients.
  • The whole movement about New Ways of Working, or Het Nieuwe Werken as it is called in Holland, tries to create this new setting of ways to organize.
At the STOOS conference in Amsterdam on the 6 and 7th of July, there were delegates from all over the western world, from Canada, the US to lots of different European nationalities. In Dubai, the Giftedness conference people from Asia, the Pacific and the Gulf States where present.  I think we can definitely say it’s a Global issue.

It’s probably no coincident the first major STOOS happening was in Amsterdam. Participants told me they were thrilled about the atmosphere, the openness and the level of participation. I am Dutch and so I am more aware of what happens in Holland than elsewhere, but  as the above list shows there is a lot going on here in Holland, and foreigners are happy to fly half the globe to join what is happening.

Still lots of Decision Making Units in the Dutch society as well,  have no clue of what’s going on.

What I think is going on is that these groups feel ways to gain flexibility, creativity, innovation, synergy and enhancing excellence. To handle complexity. To act out of logic, rather than dogmatic visions of someone's "truth". By tapping into new Value systems, called Green and especially Yellow in the terminology "Spiral Dynamics" uses.

I explained those Green and Yellow Value Systems in the Blog from aug. 1st

Push a button!

From the start of my Blog on 23th of July up till today, the 4th of August 415 visitors have read one or more of my posted stories. That seems a High number to me and it is certainly more than I would have expected it to be. Even more as it is Holiday season in Holland and my friends and professional acquaintances are sitting in the sun somewhere instead of reading what's going on on the internet.

I have visitors from the The Netherlands, United States, Russia, France, Spain, Saoudi Arabia, Germany, Croatia and Singapore. In this order of number of visitors.

Only, I have no idea who they are / who You are/ and what they all think of what I post.

For that reason I added the possibility to become a member, but that was not very successful so far.

So, as You read this, please leave some Sign of Life behind. I would very much like to have some image of the people who read my stories. And even better, to know if I touch the spirit of Your heart or mind somewhere.

As You all come from different sides of our planet, a bit of interaction would by nice, don't You agree?
Especially since I try to erase boundaries between people, culture's and societies!

Hope to "see" You soon!
